These easy Bisquick cheddar biscuits get a little crunch and a huge burst of flavor from adding French Fried Onions. These biscuits are perfect with a big bowl of chili or stew.

This simple recipe, which is a cross between biscuits and savory Bisquick muffins requires only 5 ingredients and a few minutes of prep before these muffins go into the oven.

    • Bisquick Cheddar Biscuits with French Fried Onions

If you don't have time to make dinner rolls, these Bisquick cheddar biscuits are exactly what you need. They bake in a muffin tin, so can be mistaken for muffins, but they are more biscuit than muffin. For example, they are denser than traditional muffins, such as these Healthy Apple Cheddar Muffins and Spiced Pumpkin Muffins with Applesauce.

You can also make these savory biscuits as drop biscuits, but since butter isn't one of the ingredients, they don't bake up flaky like many biscuit recipes such as these yeasted sweet potato biscuits.

They're good with any fall and winter dinner, and they really shine when served with chili.

Bisquick is the base ingredient, which makes this recipe super easy, and limited to 5 ingredients. If you like Bisquick in recipes like I do, you might want to check out this Mac 'n Cheese Impossible Pie. Impossible Pies are seriously amazing with how they create their own crust while they bake.

โค๏ธ Why you'll love this recipe

    • Few Ingredients: you only need FIVE ingredients to make these delicious biscuits. That's total, completely, all in.
    • Almost no Meal Prep: 5 minutes. If you don't shred your own cheese, the meal prep is closer to 2 minutes.
    • No Shaping: Drop biscuits means there's no time consuming forming of the biscuit, although you can spoon the batter into a muffin tin with shaped muffins.

    ๐Ÿง… Main Ingredients + Notes

The secret to faster and easier meals often lies in the ingredients. For example, store-bought items and ingredients you make ahead and store in the refrigerator (or freezer) can turn a 60-minute recipe into a 30-minute meal or less.

For all of the ingredients, measurements, and directions for this easy cheddar biscuit recipe, go to the Recipe Card at the bottom of this post.

    • Bisquick - I use the original Bisquick version.
    • Cheddar cheese - Purchase either a mild or sharp cheddar cheese for this recipe. I typically grate my own cheese since pre-grated cheese is coated with cellulose to prevent caking. This mutes the flavor of the cheese and inhibits its melting.
    • French's Crispy Fried Onions - these are sold in cans in most grocery stores, and you can use other manufacturers of this product. But I always use French's.
    • Egg
    • Buttermilk

    • Large bowl

    • Muffin tin - for regular sized muffins.

I love the whimsical shapes of these biscuits from the crispy fried onions.

    ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ Why This Recipe Works

    • Bisquick flour mix already contains salt and chemical leaveners including baking soda, so there's no need to add these to the recipe. The crispy fried onions also add some salt to the biscuits.
    • Buttermilk adds a slight tang to the biscuits and helps the baking soda give the biscuits some rise while they bake.
    • The French's Crispy Fried Onions add fabulous texture with just a little crunch, and helps to create whimsical shapes.
    • The crispy fried onions pack a punch of umami flavor that makes these biscuits memorable.

Fill the muffin cups completely before sliding into the oven.

    ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ Preparation Tips

    • It takes about a minute to combine the ingredients so that the Bisquick is completely absorbed into the liquid, but don't mix it any more than necessary.
    • The biscuit dough is moist, so it's best to use a large metal spoon for mixing the dough.
    • If you don't have a muffin tin, line a baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the drop biscuits about 2 inches apart. I recommend using a cookie scoop lightly oiled for consistently sized biscuits. You can use an ungreased cookie sheet if you don't have any parchment paper.
    • Even if your muffin tin is non-stick, baste each cup with melted butter before filling with the dough.

    ๐ŸงŠ Storage Tips

    • Store in an airtight container on the counter at room temperature for 2 - 3 days or in the refrigerator for 4 - 5 days.
    • Freeze in a freezer-safe container for 2 - 3 months.

    ๐Ÿ’กIdeas for Possible Variations

    • Make cheddar garlic biscuits by adding garlic powder.
    • Experiment with other types of cheese or even other varieties of cheddar cheese. For example, smoked cheddar cheese is wonderful in this recipe.

    Equipment

    • Muffin tin for medium size muffins

    Ingredients

    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter for basting the muffin cups
    • 3 cups Bisquick mix
    • ยพ cup shredded cheddar cheese I use mild cheddar cheese
    • 6 ounce can French's Crispy Fried Onions
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 cup buttermilk

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 400หšF and butter a muffin tin.
    • In a large bowl, combine the Bisquick, cheese, French Fried Onions, egg and buttermilk using a large metal spoon. The batter will be very sticky.
    • Completely fill the muffin cups using a spoon or cookie scoop.
If you bake these biscuits as drop biscuits, line a baking sheet with parchment paper and use a cookie scoop to form evenly sized drop biscuits. Since the batter is sticky, lightly oil the cookie scoop first. This prevents the dough from sticking to the scoop.
Bake for 10 - 12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean and the biscuits are golden brown.
The exact baking time will depend on the size of the muffin cups. I use a regular sized muffin tin.
